Топик New Year Holidays

At first, let me introduce myself. My name is Katherine. I’m sixteen years old and I’m a high school student. Each year we have school holidays and the longest one falls on summer. However, I like the New Year holidays most of all. They usually last for two weeks but we get to have lots of fun during this period of time.

First of all, we celebrate the New Year and Christmas. These days are long awaited by many people in the world. Nearly for everyone the 1st of January is the start of new life. That’s why this holiday is celebrated so cheerfully. After the New Year day we visit all our relatives and friends to exchange presents. To those, who live in other countries, we write postcards or letters with greetings. On the 6th of January we celebrate Orthodox Christmas in Russia. My grandmother usually cooks sweet rice with dried fruits. It’s our traditional meal for Christmas.

As it gets rather snowy outside we go sledding with friends. If there is time we also go to the nearest ice-rink to skate. Our teachers usually set some home work for holidays, so I try to find time for it as well. Most of all I like quiet evenings near the fireplace, when it snows outside and I can sit with an interesting book on a sofa and drink hot tea. Unfortunately, time flies quickly during the holidays so approximately on the 10th of January I have to go back to my daily routine again.

In Russia we also celebrate the old style New Year, which falls on the 13th of January. This day is not as important as the 1st of January, but we still prepare festive meal and treats.

New Year’s Day

My name is Catherine. I’m 12 years old. In our family’s favorite holiday is New Year’s Eve. In late December, the streets, parks, plazas dress in festive attire. Through the streets and squares stretched garlands colored lanterns. Everyone is preparing for the New Year. And in the main square set a huge tree. We are beginning to prepare for the holiday. On Christmas fairs buy each other gifts, Christmas decorations and tinsel. December 30, we set an artificial tree, and I myself dress up her for the holiday, hang toys, garlands. December 31 I help my mother to cook a festive table on arrival. New Year’s Eve always seems to me a magical and unforgettable. At midnight, after the president’s speech on television, begin to beat the chimes. We congratulate each other a happy new year and make a wish, and then exchange gifts. When I was little, then found the gifts under the tree and thought that they brought me Santa Claus. And even though I’m an adult, and I do not believe that there is a Santa Claus, but New Year’s Eve want to be in a fairy tale, and to believe in miracles. The New Year brings a lot of joy and fun. Новогодняя ночь кажется мне всегда волшебной и незабываемой. В полночь, после выступления президента по телевизору, начинают бить куранты. Мы поздравляем друг друга с новым годом и загадываем желание, а потом обмениваемся подарками. Когда я была маленькая, то подарки находила под ёлкой и думала, что их мне принёс Дед Мороз. И хоть я уже взрослая, и не верю, что существует Дед Мороз, но в новогоднюю ночь хочется оказаться в сказке и поверить в чудо. Новый год приносит много радости и веселья. Я каждый раз с нетерпением жду этого праздника.

Every country has its national holidays, but there are also holidays that are common for many countries. New Year’s Day is the first holiday of each New Year. In Russia it is the most popular holiday, but in the West people pay more attention to Christmas.

New Year is always connected with our new hopes and dreams. Everyone hopes that next new year will be better than the last one. As usual people make New Year Resolutions, they promise to start doing morning exercises, to eat healthier food. Unfortunately people don’t always keep them.

The celebration of this holiday begins on New Year’s Eve, that is, on the 31st of December. At home people stay up until midnight and much later. They light coloured lamps on New Year Tree and have late dinner with champagne. Sometimes they just watch TV or go out for late walk. Everybody gets presents.

In Scotland New Year’s Eve is called Hogmanay. Also the Scottish have the custom of First-Footing.

Most differences in celebrating New Year are connected with a meal or special food. For example, in Switzerland special bread, rich in butter, eggs and raisin is baked and a roasted goose is cooked. In Spain there is a custom to eat 12 grapes at midnight. In Greece some people play cards believing that they will be lucky the whole year if they win. In Russia the traditional dish for the holiday is “Russian salad”(оливье).

New Year is the best of holydays. At New Year’s Eve always appears this strange expectation of something big, new and great. Joyful atmosphere is all around. Everybody is busy picking nice Christmas trees, presents and feasts for holyday table. It seems like fairytale since childhood.

Preparations for this celebration are starting early. Everything begins with general cleaning. Than rooms are decorating with beautiful toys, garlands, holiday lights and candles. But most beautiful decorations are New Year and Christmas wreaths with conifer branches, bright ribbons and figures of angels.

Dishes on holyday table are always special. And the most important moment of celebration is coming of New Year with chiming clock. Last toll marks beginning of grand firework which may last for whole hour. Than all guests, relatives and friends, begin celebrations with dances and contests which last for the whole night. And first thing to do at next is to check all presents.

It is best when whether at New Year is cold and snowy. Colorful lights are flashing in all windows. Everybody is celebrating and having fun. Apparently because New Year is mutual celebration it is so much fun to celebrate it.

Лучше всего, когда погода на новый год холодная и снежная. Разноцветные огни во всех окнах кажутся ярче и теплее. Наверное новый год такой весёлый потому что он общий для всех.

New Year is one of the most beloved and cherished holidays of the year. Both adults and children like celebrating this day. In most countries it traditionally falls on the night of December 31 st . Thus, January 1 st marks the beginning of the new calendar year.

As for me, I start thinking of New Year presents at the beginning of December. I usually prepare handmade postcards for people I love and value. They say that I make fantastic postcards. That’s because I attended some scrapbooking classes several years ago.

Starting from the end of November all the shops, offices and other places in the street wear special, festive decorations and remind a fairy tale. As for my family, we start decorating the house in the middle of December.

My father usually buys a tall fir-tree and sets it up in the living-room. My brother and I happily decorate it with bright thematic toys, garlands and confetti.

For the New Year feast my mum cooks special dishes. Every year, on the 31 st of December there are plenty of sweet cookies, some vegetable salads, a roasted chicken and a bottle of champagne on our table.

At midnight my dad fills everyone’s glasses with champagne and says the toast to welcome the coming year. We also turn on the TV to hear the chimes of the Kremlin. At the same time I know that somewhere in London my English penfriend listens to the chimes of famous Big Ben.

Для новогоднего застолья моя мама готовит особые блюда. Ежегодно 31-го декабря у нас на столе сладкая выпечка, овощные салаты, жареная курица и бутылка шампанского.

В полночь мой отец наливает всем шампанское и произносит тост, приветствуя наступающий год. Мы также включаем телевизор, чтобы услышать куранты Кремля. В то же время я знаю, что где-то в Лондоне мой английский друг по переписке слушает бой часов знаменитого Биг-Бена.
